The Canadian Coast Guard

The Canadian Coast Guard is, first and foremost, highly qualified women and men who provide essential marine services to Canadians, often in hazardous conditions. These women and men work aboard Canadian Coast Guard vessels or on different Canadian Coast Guard Bases. Their role consists in saving lives, protecting Canada’s marine environment and resources and supporting marine navigation.

On a typical day, Canadian Coast Guard employees will :

  • Save 8 human lives;
  • Assist 55 persons in 19 Search & Rescue response operations;
  • Check 55 Aids to Navigation;
  • Manage 2436 commercial shipping movements;
  • Answer 1127 radio communications;
  • Conduct 14 marine safety awareness activities;
  • Respond to 5 environmental pollution reports;
  • Carry 5 fishery patrols;
  • Escort 4 commercial ships through ice;

To adequately fulfill its various mandates, the Canadian Coast Guard operates a wide range of highly advanced transport equipment, such as icebreakers, buoy tenders, inshore rescue boats, air-cushion vehicles, helicopters and many more adapted units for Search & Rescue and fishery surveillance.
