Training and Working Conditions

Training

All selected students must attend the training program in Québec City scheduled each spring. This intensive session provides specialized training in search and rescue techniques and the use of the equipment required, in accordance with national and international rescue operations. The training period will be from may 12 to 27th 2012. Lodging accommodations and meals will be provided during this period.

Working Conditions

Jobs are available from the beginning of June to the end of August. Each rescue station has two SAR teams of two crew members, headed by a boat coxswain. Each work week comprises seven consecutive days (one week on; one week off), each team relaying the other. The teams work a 80-hour week, from May 31st to Labor Day 2012.

The Canadian Coast Guard reserves the right to post students to stations according to availability and operational criteria. Students are paid according to Treasury Board standards.
The wages for 2011 was: Crew Member $13.98/hour; Boat Coxswain $18.31/hour. (in review for 2012)
