Canadian Hydrographic Service

The Canadian Coast Guard and the Canadian Hydrographic Service are both part of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Both organizations work in close collaboration to ensure safe and efficient navigation in Canadian waters. While the Canadian Coast Guard is responsible for managing, broadcasting and publishing safety-related information by means of broadcast and written notices to shipping, the Canadian Hydrographic Service is responsible for producint, updating, publishing and distributiing marine charts, sailing directions and other publications on navigation safety and the state of the waterways.

Another area in which the Canadian Coast Guard and the Canadian Hydrographic Service work in close collaboration is the maintenance of water depths and the management of related information in the commercial channels. The Waterways Management Division of the Canadian Coast Guard is responsible for designing the commercial channels, maintaining the specified water depth, broadcasting and publishing information on water depths in commercial channels.  The Canadian Hydrographic Service collaborates with the Canadian Coast Guard carrying out and managing sounding activities and bathymetric surveys required to manage and publish the channel state and water depths information.

Information is constantly exchanged between the Canadian Hydrographic Service and the Canadian Coast Guard in order to ensure navigation safety.
