Electronics Technician

What is an Electronics Technician?

The Electronics Technician performs technical tasks associated with the maintenance, installation, troubleshooting and programming of equipment to ensure proper operation of shipboard electronic systems on board Canadian Coast Guard vessels and at Marine Communications and Traffic Services Centres (MCTS). The Technologist is also responsible for inspecting radio installations on board commercial and governmental vessels.

What are the educational requirements?

  • Successful completion of secondary education and an acceptable electronics technology training program, preferably a College education certificate (DEC) in electronics technology.
  • An acceptable arrangement of education, training and experience as approved by the Employer and the Public Service Commission.

  • Any College offering an electronics technology program or equivalent.

  • The Canadian Coast Guard offers a Marine Electronics Development Program (MELDEV) with an objective of recruiting and training electronics technologists.
  • Work as a technician in engineering departments;
