Control Towers For The St. Lawrence River

MCTS Centres of the Canadian Coast Guard

Did you know that it is not only airports that have control towers? In Canada, the Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) centres of the Canadian Coast Guard are at work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. In Quebec, MCTS centres are located in Longueuil, Quebec City, Les Escoumins and Rivière-au-Renard.

MCTS officers ensure the safe and efficient movement of vessels and the protection of the marine environment by regulating marine traffic. They perform their duties using state-of-the-art marine radar, radio communications and positioning technologies. MCTS officers also authorize vessel departures and provide the information needed by pilots and captains for decision making.

MCTS centres are to the marine sector what 9-1-1 is to the land sector: a front-line emergency service. The duties of MCTS officers also include monitoring calling and distress frequencies. Every year, some 1,500 requests for assistance are received by the MCTS centres, which manage the communications of all stakeholders during rescue operations.
