1. What is e-Navigation?

e-Navigation is the harmonized collection, integration, exchange, presentation and analysis of marine information onboard and ashore by electronic means to enhance berth to berth navigation and related services for safety and security at sea and protection of the marine environment.

2. What is the Maritime Information Portal?

The maritime information portal was developed as part of the Canadian Coast Guard e-Navigation initiative in partnership with other government departments and organizations in the maritime domain. The portal facilitates access to official data and services needed to prepare a voyage plan in Canadian waters, including marine weather, ice conditions, tides, restrictions to navigation and sailing directions.

3. Who are CCG's e-Navigation partners?

CCG’s e-Navigation partners include Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Canadian Hydrographic Service, Transport Canada, Environment Canada, Industry Canada, port authorities, shipping agencies and ship owners, pilotage authorities, the Saint Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, and private companies working in the maritime domain.

4. Will improvements be made to the Maritime Information Portal in the future?

Yes, improvements will be made continuously. We pay attention to user feedback, particularly from the Canadian maritime community, to ensure that the portal meets the community's needs and expectations.

5. What is the liability of the Government of Canada respecting data use?

The Government of Canada shall have no liability for any damage caused by the use of the data, nor for how the data is used. The portal does not replace the regulatory obligation to carry official publications on board the ship (carriage requirements).

6. Who is responsible for the governance and maintenance of the data?

The data published on the Maritime Information Portal is made available by Government of Canada departments and our e-Navigation partners. Each of these entities is responsible for the governance and maintenance of their own data

7. Will there be future consultations on the Maritime Information Portal?

Yes, we will continue to reach out to the maritime community for their feedback and recommendations on the future direction of the Maritime Information Portal and of e-Navigation. For any comments or suggestions, please visit the Contact Us section.

You may find links to data on the Maritime Information Portal by using the « Navigation by Location » section to browse by location and category, or search for datasets and services via the Maritime Data Catalogue.

9. Will there be more data available in the future?

Yes, this is just the start. The CCG and its partners will continue to expand on the number of datasets made available through the Maritime Information Portal.

10. What is the new Open Government Licence?

The new Open Government Licence allows for commercial and non-commercial reuse of information, with only a few exceptions.

11. What rights come with the Open Government Licence - Canada?

The Licence allows the licencee to copy, modify, publish, translate, adapt, distribute or otherwise use the Information in any medium, mode or format for any lawful purpose. The licencees must, however, identify the source of the data on their derived products.

12. Who 'owns' the data on the Maritime Information Portal?

The intellectual property rights of the data belong to the Crown and to third parties. Additional information regarding the conditions governing the use of the data can be found in the Open Government Licence – Canada.
